Northwest Gyotaku

Northwest Gyotaku, located in Gig Harbor, Washington, features the art of Dennis Moore. Moore specializes in Gyotaku, a traditional Japanese method of fish printing, also known as fish rubbings. This art form dates back to the mid-1800s, originally used by Japanese fishermen to record their catches before cameras existed.

Moore utilizes the direct method to create his original prints. He applies non-toxic acrylic paints to freshly caught fish, then lays rice paper or muslin fabric over the fish. The material is carefully rubbed to transfer the impression, revealing the fish's intricate details. He then paints in the eye and other minor details, aiming for a photorealistic finish while maintaining the art's traditions.

The studio in Gig Harbor is open by request. You can also find Dennis Moore's fish rubbings at Ebb Tide Gallery in downtown Gig Harbor and Artful Connections Gallery in Port Gamble. The offerings include matted and framed original prints, unframed originals, framed reproductions, and decorative fish art tiles.
