Purdy Sand Spit

Purdy Sand Spit, often called "The Spit" by locals, is a 7.5-acre public waterfront area located along SR 302 in Gig Harbor, Washington. This unimproved area provides direct beach access and includes a boat launch, making it a convenient spot for those looking to get out on the water. The spit divides Burley Lagoon from Henderson Bay, offering views of waterfowl like seagulls and blue herons, and occasionally seals.

The area is known for fishing, particularly for sea-run cutthroat trout, which are typically catch-and-release. Salmon species, including king, coho, and chum, can also be found at Purdy for several months of the year, though catching them can be challenging. Anglers often engage in fly fishing at the sand spit, especially in the channel under the nearby bridge where currents concentrate bait fish. For recreational shellfish seasons, visitors should consult the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.

As an unimproved public area, Purdy Sand Spit has limited amenities. There are no permanent restrooms or garbage facilities, although portable bathrooms may be available during organized events. Parking is available along SR 302, providing easy access to the beach. Beyond fishing, the spit attracts families, pet owners, swimmers, and paddleboarders, particularly during warmer weather.
