Prison Pet Partnership Program

The Prison Pet Partnership Program (PPP), established in 1981, is located at the Washington Corrections Center for Women in Gig Harbor. It was the first prison pet program of its kind worldwide. The program enriches the lives of incarcerated individuals, animals, and the community by fostering the human-animal bond.

PPP offers a variety of pet services to the public, including dog boarding, grooming, and training. These services provide hands-on vocational education for incarcerated women, allowing them to earn certifications as pet care technicians, groomers, and dog trainers. The program focuses on positive reinforcement training techniques and aims to prepare participants for post-release employment in the animal care industry.

Beyond vocational training, PPP's core mission involves training service dogs, facility dogs, and therapy dogs, which are then placed with individuals and organizations at no cost. Dogs that do not meet the requirements for service certification, along with cats and dogs rescued from shelters, enter the "Paroled Pets" program for adoption into loving homes. The program has placed over 700 dogs and cats since its inception.
